Interpretation: In these standards, the term “detoxification” refers to detoxification from opioid drugs and not medical or administrative withdrawal from opioid treatment medication, which is addressed in PA-OTP 15.

NA The agency does not provide detoxification treatment.

PA-OTP 12.01

Qualified personnel determine if short- or long-term detoxification treatment is appropriate for the individual using diagnostic criteria according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders.

PA-OTP 12.02

The agency conducts an initial drug test for individuals in short- and long-term detoxification treatment and monthly random tests for individuals receiving long-term detoxification treatment.

PA-OTP 12.03

The agency limits individuals to two detoxification treatment episodes per year.

PA-OTP 12.04

Individuals who have had two or more unsuccessful detoxification episodes are assessed by a physician to determine the need for other forms of treatment.

	PROGRAM A system of services offered by an organization. For example, an organization providing a mental health service may offer several mental health programs to different populations, e.g., a mental health program for adolescent teens. The word "program" can be used interchangeably with the word "service" or to describe specific programs.


	DETOXIFICATION The process by which drugs or other harmful substances are removed from a person's body for a time period sufficient to restore adequate physiological and psychosocial functioning.


	MEDICATION A prescribed or over-the-counter drug that is injected, taken orally, applied topically, or otherwise administered.


	PERSONNEL The body of employees and/or volunteers that carries out the organization's tasks under the organization's administration and/or supervision. This definition does not include foster parents who are specifically referenced in relevant standards


	CRITERIA Systematically developed, objective, and quantifiable statements used to assess the appropriateness of specific decisions, services, and outcomes.
